What is Velocity?
Quick Definition
A metric measuring the amount of work a team completes in a sprint, typically measured in story points or task counts.
How it works
Velocity helps teams predict how much work they can take on in future sprints. It's calculated by summing the story points (or tasks) completed in each sprint and averaging over time. Velocity is a planning tool, not a performance metric—it should never be used to compare teams.
Velocity in practice
Over the last 3 sprints, a team completed 21, 24, and 18 story points. Their average velocity is 21 points, so they plan for about 21 points in the next sprint.
