What is User Story?

Quick Definition

A short, informal description of a feature or requirement written from the perspective of the end user, typically in the format: 'As a [user], I want [goal], so that [benefit].'

How it works

User stories keep teams focused on delivering value to real users rather than building features in a vacuum. They're intentionally brief—the conversation around the story is more important than the written description. Stories are often refined with acceptance criteria that define 'done.'

User Story in practice

'As a freelancer, I want to share my project board with clients, so that they can see progress without asking me for updates.' Acceptance criteria: client can view board, add comments, and submit task requests.
